LSTX-5 “Jefferson”
- LHRT/LASTA #5
- Model: Sleeper Car
- Builder: Pullman
- Build Date: 11 NOV 1925
- Specifications: Lot #4886, Plan #3959
- Road Numbers: #17, LSTX#5
The “Jefferson” was manufactured by Pullman on November 11, 1925. This 3-compartment / 2-drawing room sleeper was originally named “Central House.” and provided service between St. Louis and New York.
Pullman produced 25 of these cars for service on the New York Central, using the clever prefix of “Central” in the name. These cars contained Pullman’s most expensive accommodations and were only used on the most deluxe trains. Many of them became surplus during the Depression as they were unsuitable for use on lesser trains. Beginning in the late 1930s, many were replaced by newer streamlined models. Thirteen of the Central cars were later sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) in 1942 and rebuilt into coaches.
