Port Orleans Brewing Co. will unveil a new brew, Historic SP 745 Lager, with a festive beer release party on Sunday, September 25th.
Come enjoy Historic SP 745 Lager and support the non-profit Louisiana Steam Train Association (LASTA). Historic SP 745 Lager will help fund LASTA and its 100-year-old steam locomotive.
Southern Pacific #745 (SP 745) was built at SP’s Algiers, Louisiana shops in 1921 and is the sole surviving Louisiana-built steam locomotive. SP 745 is on the National Register of Historic Places and is Louisiana’s Official Steam Locomotive. SP 745 served as a workhorse for the Southern Pacific Railroad hauling freight as well as pulling troop trains during World War II.
After 28 years on static display in Audubon Park, in 1984, Audubon’s plan to expand its zoo necessitated the removal of the engine. A group of local rail enthusiasts rescued 745 from a sure fate to the scrap yard. After many years, she was eventually rebuilt. In 2004 she became a one-of-a-kind living, breathing, steaming, rolling and truly iconic example of Louisiana railroad history.
The Historic SP 745 Lager release party begins at 11:30 am. Come celebrate and stay to watch the Saints, on the road, as they battle the Panthers on several big-screen TVs.
We hope you will join us for a fun day in support of a worthy historical cause and help LASTA in its quest to continue operating SP 745 for years to come.
